What is AI SDR?
An AI SDR is an agent aimed specifically at the sales development function — building target lists, researching prospects, writing cold outreach and running follow-up cadences. It automates the top of the funnel and, in most implementations, stops at the reply.
Why it matters
The category arrived loudly in 2024 and 2025 on a headcount-replacement pitch, and then split on a single question: does the system send without a human. The autonomous wing produced the category's most public failures — outreach customers had not approved, damaged sending domains, and performance claims that did not survive scrutiny. The supervised wing kept the same labor savings and gave up the send decision, and it is where most of the market has settled.
The narrower limitation of the AI SDR framing is scope. An AI SDR treats outbound volume as the problem, when the more common problem is targeting and messaging: a well-executed cadence aimed at the wrong ICP fails faster, not better.
